Sacramento Kings point guard Russell Westbrook, the active player with the most triple-doubles in NBA history, is on the court.
progresifjaya.co.id, JAKARTA – A triple-double is a prestigious term in basketball. A player is considered to have achieved a triple-double if they score double digits in three of five statistical categories in a single game.
The common categories for scoring a triple-double are points, rebounds, and assists. The other two categories are blocks and steals. However, impressive triple-doubles with blocks or steals, such as points, rebounds, and blocks, are very rare. The most common and frequent combination remains points, rebounds, and assists.
The first triple-double in basketball statistics is points. This is the number of points scored by a player, whether from free throws or free throws, which are worth one point.
Two-point shots can come from shots under the basket, lay-ups, or slam dunks. Three-point shots, on the other hand, come from long-range shots or three-pointers. Statistics then combine these three types of points to create the total number of points scored by a basketball player in a single game.
Besides points, there’s the category of assists, or passes that result in points. This is the assist category in basketball statistics.
The third category is rebounds. The ball a player releases toward the basket bounces back instead of going in. The player who receives the rebound is said to have made a rebound. A player on offense who receives a rebound is called an offensive rebounder. A defensive player who receives a rebound is called a defensive rebounder.

Larry Bird, an NBA Hall of Fame player, is among the 12 players with the most career triple-doubles.
The fourth category assessed in basketball statistics is the steal. This refers to a defensive player’s ability to steal the ball from an opponent who is in possession. Steals are more often performed by players in the guard position.
Finally, there’s the fifth category of block shots, which is included in basketball game statistics. This refers to a defensive player successfully deflecting a ball that’s heading toward the basket, but the ball hasn’t yet descended. This type of block is more often performed by center or forward players. The term “bigman” refers to a player tasked with protecting their team’s basket from opposing attacks.
Scoring double digits in both steals and blocks is notoriously difficult. It’s extremely rare for a basketball player to score double digits in both categories in a single game.
For steals, an average of just five is already remarkable. Block shots, on the other hand, are even more challenging. However, specifically in the NBA, there are still basketball players who have scored double digits in both categories.
The proof is the official record of four NBA players who have achieved quadruple-doubles to date. They were David Robinson, who recorded 34 points, 10 assists, 10 rebounds, and 10 blocks in 1994; Hakeem Olajuwon with 18 points, 10 assists, 16 rebounds, and 11 blocks in 1990; Nate Thurmond with 22 points, 14 rebounds, 13 assists, and 12 blocks in 1974; and Alvin Robertson with 20 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists, and 10 steals (the only steal) in 1986.
The triple-double is different. Currently, quite a few NBA basketball players have achieved it in a single game.
The active basketball player who frequently scores triple-doubles is Sacramento Kings guard Russell Westbrook, now 37 years old. However, many people believe Westbrook is too focused on individual records in pursuit of triple-doubles rather than leading his team to victory.

David Robinson, one of the NBA Hall of Fame players who officially recorded a rare record of an impressive quadruple-double during his 14-year playing career in the NBA.
It’s no wonder Westbrook’s current triple-double record is truly extraordinary. He holds the record for most triple-doubles in NBA history. As of October 2021, Westbrook has recorded 207 triple-doubles during his 18-year NBA career. Second place is held by Oscar Robertson with 181 triple-doubles since 1974.
In 2017, Westbrook became one of two players in NBA history to average a triple-double in a single season, along with Oscar Robertson in 1962. He also set the record for most triple-doubles in a single season with 42 in 2017.
Now, more and more NBA players are achieving triple-doubles. Dallas Mavericks’ 26-year-old Luca Doncic is only in his third year in the NBA. But he has already recorded 95 triple-doubles. In the current 2026 season, he has recorded five triple-doubles. His most recent record came when the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Denver Nuggets 115-107 at Ball Arena on Tuesday, January 21, 2026. Doncic recorded a triple-double with 38 points, 13 rebounds, 10 assists, and two steals in 35 minutes.
