Dirlantas Polda Metro Jaya: “Potholes Due to Flooding Are One of Four Factors Causing Traffic Accidents”

Director of Traffic of the Polda Metro Jaya, Kombes Pol Komarudin.

progresifjaya.co.id, JAKARTA – Jakarta’s highly active skies have recently blanketed the capital city with extreme rainfall. The volume of rain exceeding 150 mm, equivalent to 8 gallons of water per square meter, is in stark contrast to the availability of Jakarta’s Green Open Space (RTH), which is only 5,18% for absorption. This falls far short of the 30% required by law (20% public, 10% private). As a result, Jakarta is inundated with floodwaters everywhere.

Admittedly, the impact of this disaster has created a massive task for the Polda Metro Jaya Traffic Directorate (Ditlantas). And its resolution is conditional. It must be on the same level: and extremely fast. Many roads in Jakarta are riddled with potholes due to prolonged flooding.

The Director of Traffic (Dirlantas) for the Polda Metro Jaya, Kombes Pol Komarudin explained in his succinct explanation, that the massive workload, due to the numerous potholes caused by flooding, is one of the four factors contributing to traffic accidents. The other three factors are human error (public relations error), vehicles, and weather. In his analysis, potholes caused by flooding also have the potential to be a major cause of traffic congestion.

He continued explaining, that regarding this massive workload, his team is continuing to coordinate with relevant parties to repair and fill the gaping potholes. The safety of motorists is a top priority.

“To be honest, potholes have the potential to cause technical disruptions. From slowdowns and congestion to accidents, these are all causes on a regular basis. Therefore, ongoing coordination with relevant agencies is essential for repairs,” said the Gemini man born in Jakarta on June 2, 1975.

The Polda Metro Jaya Traffic Directorate also recorded 27 traffic accidents in Jakarta and its surrounding areas due to potholes during the January 2026 rainy season.

Head of Sub-Directorate of Law Enforcement, Polda Metro Jaya Traffic Directorate, AKBP Ojo Ruslani.

“There were 27 traffic accidents due to potholes, from January 1 to January 28, 2026. The victims were one fatality, eight serious injuries, and 18 minor injuries,” said Head of the Sub-Directorate of Law Enforcement at the Polda Metro Jaya Traffic Directorate, AKBP Ojo Ruslani, Thursday, January 29, 2026.

Regarding this matter, the Jakarta Highways Agency has recorded 1.383 potholes or potholes caused by flooding throughout Jakarta. Repairs were carried out from January 11 to 21, 2026.

This work was carried out by the Highways Implementation Unit at the sub-district, sub-district, and agency levels.

“Data collection on the number of road damage points is ongoing and is being updated along with the verification process in the field,” said Siti Dinarwenny, Head of the Data and Information Center for the Jakarta Highways Agency, in Jakarta on Wednesday, January 28, 2026.

She also explained, that various mitigation measures have been implemented to minimize the risk to motorists. Highways Operational Units at sub-district and sub-district levels, as well as the Yellow Troop Task Force, were quickly mobilized to monitor the situation.

Any road found in need of repair is immediately addressed to prevent traffic accidents. Patching potholes is a temporary and emergency measure due to uncertain weather conditions. (Bembo)
