A debt collector with the initials ML was arrested by Polsek of Cengkareng officers for aggressive behavior and intimidation involving threats while attempting to collect a debt.

progresifjaya.co.id, JAKARTA — The Polsek of Cengkareng  have arrested a goon debt collector identified by the initials ML, alias E (30). ML was apprehended in connection with a case involving unlawful coercion and/or minor assault that took place at a gas station on Jalan Kamal Raya Ring Road, West Cengkareng, West Jakarta.

The forced debt collection incident occurred on Friday, August 21, 2026, at approximately 17:30 WIB. The incident drew public attention after video footage of it circulated on social media.

Kapolres Metro of West Jakarta, Kombes Pol Nasriadi explained, that the case was handled after police received a report and investigated the sequence of events surrounding the vehicle repossession attempt.

“Financing disputes have their own established resolution mechanisms. However, when the collection process involves threats or actions that cross into criminal territory, the police are obligated to handle the matter based on existing facts and evidence,” stated Kombes Pol Nasriadi on Monday, August 24, 2026.

The incident began when ML received information about a car that was reportedly three months behind on payments. He approached the vehicle while it was refueling and identified himself to the driver as an authorized representative of BFI Finance. He then requested that the arrears issue be resolved at the finance company’s office in the Cengkareng area.

During the interaction, ML got into the car with the driver’s family. As the vehicle began to move, he asked the driver to stop so he could get out, threatening to place the driver in a neck lock if the vehicle continued moving. ML was arrested on Saturday, August 22, 2026, and a Samsung S24 Ultra mobile phone was seized as evidence.

Investigators have processed the case against ML, charging him under Article 448 and/or Article 471 of the Criminal Code (KUHP).  Investigators are also continuing to examine statements from the parties involved, along with the evidence, to fully piece together the details of the case.

The Head of Public Relations for the Polda Metro Jaya, Kombes Pol Bhudi Hermawan emphasized, that the right to collect a debt cannot be separated from the obligation to respect the law and the safety of others.

“While there is a right to collect, there are limits that must not be crossed. Debt collection must not devolve into pressure, intimidation, or threats that create new legal issues,” said Kombes Pol Bhudi.

He added, that disputes arising from financing arrangements should be resolved through legitimate mechanisms.

“Legal certainty should be the framework for resolution, not pressure or confrontation. That way, the rights and interests of all parties remain protected. If members of the public experience unlawful actions during the debt collection process, they should immediately report it to the nearest police station or call the Polri Call Center at 110 so that prompt action can be taken,” he added.
