Statement from the BYD Driver

Details regarding the incident—in which a BYD electric vehicle driven by an individual identified as ‘S’ (46) struck another vehicle and ran over ride-hailing driver Hasan Syukur (56) on Jalan Panglima Polim, Blok M, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, on the afternoon of Friday, October 23, 2026—have also been revealed.

S admitted that he was feeling drowsy and lacked focus at the time, which caused him to lose control of the vehicle. He also panicked after striking the first vehicle. In an attempt to bring his car to a stop, he inadvertently pressed the accelerator pedal instead.

Head of the Law Enforcement Sub-directorate of the Polda Metro Jaya Directorate, AKBP Muhammad Adiel Aristo stated, that the driver—identified as S—admitted to having fallen asleep, or experiencing a microsleep, while driving.

In this state of unconsciousness, he struck a Honda Brio on his right side. Panicked, he attempted to brake but ended up pressing the accelerator instead.

“He panicked. He had fallen asleep, his legs went limp, and he pressed the gas pedal. In his panic and shock, he lost control of the vehicle, swerving left and then right,” said AKBP Adiel on Monday, October 26, 2026.

The vehicle driven by S finally came to a stop after mounting the sidewalk in front of the Amaris Hotel.

AKBP Adiel further noted that S was not under the influence of narcotics or alcohol at the time of the incident. This was confirmed by two separate urine tests, both of which returned negative results.

“He underwent two urine tests—one conducted by the local police (Polres) and another by the Polda Metro Jaya. Both were negative. It was purely a case of drowsiness and falling asleep,” he said. (Bembo)
