progresifjaya.co.id, JAKARTA – The Jakarta chapter of the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI Jaya) held its 65th Class of Journalist Competency Test (UKW) at the Multipurpose Building of the Central Jakarta Mayor’s Office, Monday-Tuesday, May 25-26, 2026. This year’s UKW focused on competence, professionalism, and adherence to the journalistic code of ethics (KEJ).
A total of 32 participants registered for the UKW. They comprised 26 junior-level UKW participants, four intermediate-level UKW participants, and two primary-level UKW participants. These UKW participants came from various regions, not just Jakarta. Some came from Aceh, Bangka Belitung, and even Pekanbaru.
In his remarks, Central Jakarta Mayor Arifin stated, that competency certification has become a crucial requirement in various professions, including journalism. He also emphasized the strategic role of the media in conveying timely and accurate information to the public.
“We welcome all UKW participants to the Central Jakarta Mayor’s Office. Currently, almost all professions require competency certification, including journalists,” said Arifin.
According to him, the relationship between the regional government and the press has been good and mutually supportive. The government, he continued, also needs the media to convey development information to the public.
“We feel greatly helped by the updated news from our media partners. This synergy must continue to be built, including criticism and input from the media, to build a better Central Jakarta,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the The Jakarta chapter of the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI Jaya), Kesit Handoyo, emphasized, that the UKW is not merely an administrative formality. It is also an important part of maintaining the quality and integrity of journalists.
“The UKW is an important step in creating professional journalists who adhere to the journalistic code of ethics,” said Kesit.
Kesit also explained, that not all journalists can participate in the UKW. This is because there are several administrative requirements that must be met first. A UKW participant must come from a press company that meets administrative requirements and media institutional standards. In addition to being a legal entity, press companies must also have a clear editorial structure and be led by an editor-in-chief who has obtained a UKW Utama certificate.
All of these administrative requirements, he continued, have adapted to the rapid development of digital media. A journalist must be competent to meet the demands of presenting information quickly, accurately, balancedly, and responsibly.
“This UKW is expected to be an effort to strengthen the quality of journalists.
It also aims to maintain public trust in journalistic products amidst the rapid flow of information in the digital era,” Kesit emphasized.
