Bareskrim Polri Investigates Sexual Assault Case Against Female National Climbing Athlete

Former Head Coach Hendra Basir, a national climbing athlete, has been reported for harassment of a female climbing athlete.
progresifjaya.co.id, JAKARTA – The Polri Criminal Investigation Agency (Bareskrim Polri) is investigating reports of alleged sexual assault allegedly committed by Hendra Basir (HB), the former head coach of the National Climbing Athlete Association (Pelatnas), against several female athletes. The case was reported to the Bareskrim Polri under Number: LP/B/101/III/2026/SPKT/Bareskrim Polri, dated March 3, 2026.
The Director of Criminal Actions for the Protection of Women and Children and the Eradication of Human Trafficking (Dittipid PPA-PPO) at the Bareskrim Polri, Brigjen Pol Nurul Azizah stated in an official statement, that the reported incidents allegedly occurred between 2021 and 2025, primarily at the Bekasi Athlete Dormitory located at Jalan Harapan Indah Boulevard No. 10–12, Medan Satria, North Bekasi, and in several countries while athletes were participating in international competitions.
The report was filed by the complainant, identified as SD, who is the authorized representative of the victims, female rock climbing athletes at the Pelatnas. Meanwhile, the accused, Hendra Basir, is known to be the Head Coach of the Pelatnas rock climbing athletes, who has since been dismissed by the Indonesian Rock Climbing Federation (FPTI).
During the investigation, Brigjen Pol Nurul Azizah continued, investigators from the Directorate of Child Protection, Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection (Dittipid PPA-PPO) of the Bareskrim Polri have taken several initial investigative steps.
“On March 6, 2026, investigators conducted a preliminary investigation with the complainant, SD, and one of the athletes, identified as PJ. Furthermore, investigators accompanied the victims to undergo a post-mortem examination at the Kramat Jati Polri Hospital,” said Brigjen Pol Nurul Azizah.
Furthermore, on March 9, 2026, investigators conducted further investigations with four other athletes, identified as RS, PL, KA, NA, and AV. A request for a post-mortem examination (visum et repertum) and a psychiatric examination at the Kramat Jati Polri Hospital has also been issued for the athletes.
According to Brigjen Pol Nurul Azizah, assistance from the Regional Technical Implementation Unit for the Protection of Women and Children (UPTD PPA) was not provided because the victims were already receiving psychological and legal assistance from the FPTI.
She stated, that investigators have also secured several pieces of preliminary evidence in this case. These include an initial report of alleged sexual harassment from the Indonesian Rock Climbing Federation dated February 14, 2026, a decision by the FPTI Central Board regarding the 2025 national training camp, as well as identity documents and WhatsApp conversations between the female athletes and the accused.
Based on preliminary investigations, investigators suspect the accused used his position as head coach to approach the athletes.
“The alleged modus operandi was abusing his authority as head coach of the national training center by exploiting the vulnerability of female athletes. The indecent acts included hugging, kissing, groping, masturbation, and sexual intercourse,” said Brigjen Pol Nurul Azizah.
Investigators are currently continuing their investigation by conducting post-mortems on the victims, conducting psychiatric examinations, inspecting the crime scene, and interviewing witnesses and the accused.
They are also gathering other evidence to clarify the reported incident.
The accused, Hendra Basir, is suspected of violating Article 6 letters B and C of Law Number 12 of 2022 concerning Criminal Acts of Sexual Violence in conjunction with Article 15 of the same law.
The penalty is a maximum of 12 years’ imprisonment and/or a maximum fine of Rp300 million. This penalty can be increased by up to one-third if the crime is committed within the educational setting or is committed more than once. (Bembo)
