progresifjaya.co.id, JAKARTA – A driver’s license (SIM) is an official document that every driver in Indonesia must possess. Therefore, in 2026, the government issued another new regulation to create a more user-friendly driver’s license (SIM) for seniors (60 years and older).
This regulation was issued to ensure that the growing number of senior drivers can continue driving safely, comfortably, and in accordance with the law.
SIM regulations for seniors in Indonesia also continue to follow the standard five-year renewal procedure, but with a strict focus on physical and mental health. There is no stated maximum age limit. However, renewals still require an eye health test and a psychological test to ensure motor skills and reaction time are still functioning properly, given the increased risk of accidents.
The following are the key points regarding the rules and guidelines for driving licenses for seniors:
Periodic Renewal: A senior’s driver’s license remains valid for five years and must be renewed, not for life.
Strict Health Tests: Seniors are required to pass physical (especially eye) and mental (psychological) health examinations to ensure their fitness to drive, according to Geriatri.co.id.
Physical and Mental Health: If seniors have a history of chronic illness or drug dependence that impairs concentration/reflexes, they should not insist on renewing their driver’s license due to safety risks.
Accompaniment Suggestions: Based on safety studies, it is recommended that seniors be accompanied while driving and undergo additional skills tests during driver’s license renewal.
Ideal Age Limit: Although the law does not specify a limit, many experts recommend a maximum driving age of 60-65 due to the drastic decline in motor skills.
Renewal procedures can be completed at a Satpas (SIM Service Unit), a mobile SIM (SIM Keliling), or through an online application with the same document requirements (old driver’s license, ID card, and health certificate). (Bembo)
