Polda Metro Focus on and Collect Evidence in Lewd Chat Group of 16 Law Students from the University of Indonesia

16 alleged perpetrators of sexual violence against UI Law students received sanctions in the form of student status suspensions from the UI Rectorate.
progresifjaya.co.id, JAKARTA – The Polda Metro Jaya is focusing attention on the lewd chat group involving students from the Faculty of Law, University of Indonesia (FH UI). The Directorate of Investigation for the Protection of Women and Children and the Eradication of Human Trafficking (Ditres PPA-PPO) in coordination with UI, is currently collecting evidence in the case.
The Head of Public Relations of the Polda Metro Jaya, Kombes Pol Bhudi Hermanto explained, that in addition to collecting evidence, the Ditres PPA-PPO is also preparing a report regarding the coordination with the university.
“We at the Polda Metro Jaya have opened the space and are paying attention to this incident, even though there has not yet been a police report regarding the case,” Kombes Pol Bhudi Hermanto told the media on Thursday, April 16, 2026.
He added, that the Polda Metro Jaya have coordinated with legal counsel to provide assistance to the victim. However, the Polda Metro Jaya respect the ongoing process at UI University.
“Institutionally, we respect that the campus or university is taking steps internally. And we urge everyone to respect the space currently being taken by the university,” he said.
It should also be noted that the UI Rectorate has also imposed sanctions in the form of student status suspensions on 16 alleged perpetrators. This decision was made to ensure the investigation process runs optimally and transparently.
“Based on the Internal Memo on the Investigation Follow-up Plan (RTLP) from the UI Violence Prevention and Handling Task Force (Satgas PPK), dated April 15, 2026, the Task Force officially recommended the temporary suspension of student status for the 16 reported students,” said Erwin Agustian Panigoro, Director of Public Relations, Media, Government, and International Relations at UI, in a statement on Thursday, April 16, 2026.
He stated, that the temporary academic suspension for the 16 students is in effect from April 15 to May 30, 2026. This policy was taken as a preventative administrative measure by the university.
“During the suspension period, the suspects are not permitted to participate in all educational activities and teaching and learning processes, including lectures, academic guidance, or other activities related to academic activities,” said Erwin.
Previously, the victim’s attorney, Timotius Rajagukguk, during a press conference at the UI Student Activity Center, stated that an open hearing had been held in the UI Faculty of Law Auditorium on Monday, April 14, 2026. The hearing was attended by students, lecturers, and the dean, and discussed the next steps for handling this case.
He emphasized, however, that the faculty had not mentioned that it would pursue a criminal report.
“But as far as i recall, the faculty didn’t mention it at all yesterday. The faculty’s intention to pursue this with a criminal report, a police report, was not explicitly stated,” Timotius said on Tuesday, April 15, 2026.
However, he continued, as the victim’s attorney, he is ready to step in if the faculty wishes to pursue the case with a police report. This sexual assault case at UI Faculty of Law will be brought to justice.
“If the faculty wishes to pursue this case with a police report, of course, as a representative of several victims, i am also ready to collaborate in bringing this case to court. Just wait and see ya,” Timotius reiterated.
