Student Accused of Stealing a Watch Ends Up Dead, Family Urges Bareskrim to Investigate Alleged Mob Assault

Gunawan Raka, legal counsel for the victim, reports the killing of Muhammad Fajarudin to the Bareskrim of the Polri.
progresifjaya.co.id, JAKARTA – Accusations of theft should be addressed through due legal process. But what happens when someone accused of theft is found lying incapacitated, covered in injuries, and ultimately loses their life?
This is the question now being raised by the family of Muhammad Fajarudin, a student at Universitas Bhakti Pertiwi Indonesia in Jakarta, who passed away on Monday, October 5, 2026.
In a formal complaint letter dated October 20, 2026, addressed to the Head of the Criminal Investigation Agency (Kabareskrim) of the Polri, the victim’s parents—Rasidi and Haniah—have requested an investigation into an alleged mob assault or collective act of violence that resulted in their son’s death.
The family’s legal counsel, Gunawan Raka stated, that they have received a detailed account from the family regarding the sequence of events leading up to M. Fajarudin’s death.
The family has also filed an official report with the Bareskrim, registered under number TTLP/530/Xlf2026/BARESKRIM and received by AKP Yudi Bintoro. The report outlines the alleged assault involving M. Fajarudin, which took place on Monday, November 2, 2026.
According to the family’s account provided in the complaint, the incident began on the night of Sunday, October 4, 2026, at approximately 11:00 PM (WIB).
At that time, Fajarudin—who was busy working on a group assignment—received a phone call from an unidentified individual instructing him to come to an empty house.
Upon arriving at the location, the victim encountered eight people—a group that, according to the family, consisted of three civilians and five individuals suspected of being members of the TNI.
They then interrogated Fajarudin regarding the alleged theft of a wristwatch and Rp1 million in cash. However, the situation took a serious turn when Muhammad Fuad Hasyim Abrori, who lived in the same boarding house as the victim, reported hearing the sounds of blows and shouting coming from inside the building.
Around 2:00 AM on Monday, October 5, 2026, Fuad was called back inside. He found Fajarudin lying on the ground, his body covered in bruises, with fresh blood coming from his head.
The victim was taken to a community health center (puskesmas) before being transferred to the Cilandak Marine Hospital. Sadly, Fajarudin couldn’t be saved.
The family only learned of his death around 7:07 AM, via a WhatsApp message from an unknown person.
When the body arrived in Lampung at approximately 7:30 PM, the family observed bruises on the victim’s face and several other parts of his body.
For the family, the condition of the body raises serious questions. They suspect that Fajarudin was the victim of a collective act of violence that resulted in his death.
Allegations of Theft Must Not Justify Violence
Gunawan Raka asserts, that this case warrants serious attention from law enforcement authorities. An accusation of theft should never serve as a pretext for anyone to carry out acts of violence outside of established legal channels.
“If there is an allegation of theft, the state provides a legal mechanism to prove it—not by interrogating someone in an empty house. Instead, the family received news that their son had died,” explained Gunawan on Monday, November 2, 2026.
Gunawan also emphasized the importance of identifying everyone present at the scene, determining who committed the acts of violence, and establishing the sequence of events that led to the victim’s death.
Gunawan added, that a matter which should have been resolved through the legal process must not be allowed to escalate into a tragedy that claims a human life.
“Watches and money can be replaced, but a human life has no ‘reset’ button,” Gunawan stated firmly.
The Family Seeks Justice, Not Just Explanations
In their formal complaint, Rasidi and Haniah have explicitly requested that the Kabareskrim of the Polri, Komjen Pol Asep Safrudin—acting through the Director of General Crimes, Brigjen Pol Susatyo Purnomo Condro—take immediate action regarding the report.
The family has also retained the law firm Gunawan Raka & Partners to provide legal counsel and advocate for their rights as the victim’s family.
Gunawan Raka hopes, that investigators will promptly identify all individuals who were present at the scene, interview witnesses, examine the CCTV footage—which was reportedly shown to the family—and determine the medical cause of Fajarudin’s death.
Ultimately, this case involves far more than just an alleged theft of a wristwatch and Rp1 million. Yet, a student has died, a family has lost their child, and a series of events has unfolded that demands a legal response.
“We must not reach a point where the only thing resolved quickly is the burial of the victim, while the question of who is responsible for his death is left to drag on indefinitely,” he asserted.
The family is now looking to the Bareskrim of the Polri to demonstrate genuine commitment. They are calling for an investigative process that is transparent and objective—one capable of uncovering all the facts surrounding the death of Muhammad Fajarudin.
“Ultimately, the law should not only sound stern when someone is accused of wrongdoing, it must also be present when a victim’s family seeks justice,” emphasized Gunawan Raka. (Bembo)
